In fashion school, most of your time was spent learning to create fashion illustrations, draping, sewing, and flat patternmaking. While these are good skills to have, they aren't very practical when you're trying to land your first job in the fashion industry. In the real world you'll be expected to know how to create computerized flat sketches, develop garment specs, CADs, and presentation boards. And I know some of you are thinking "But I learned those things in school too!" To which I reply: You think you know, but you have no idea! Take it from experience: fashion schools don't focus on those skills nearly enough to fully prepare you for your first design position. In this article I will discuss each skill and its importance in the fashion industry.

Draping and Patternmaking - Low Importance
While patternmaking and draping are valuable skills, they usually only come in handy when you deal with a lot of fits. However, fittings are usually conducted by technical design teams so if you got into fashion for creative reasons, you'll most likely be miserable in this type of position. On the creative side of design, all you need is a basic understanding of what creates a good fit, and how to fix a bad one. In the majority of design positions, hands-on patternmaking skills are not necessary, unless you plan to enter Project Runway!

Sewing - Low Importance
On the creative side of design, sewing isn't that relevant. Yes, it's good to understand the general concepts of garment construction, but you don't need to be a great seamstress. On the job, if you need to know how a certain garment is constructed, there are tons of references available: from clothes at the stores, to "how to" books and online articles. The point I'm trying to make is: if you're sewing skills leave something to be desired, don't stress over it.

Illustration - Almost Unnecessary
Sadly, fashion illustrations are a dying art in the industry - they are scarcely used by designers in the real world. The fashion illustration has been replaced with computer drawn stylized technical sketches (floats) or more accurate technical flats, which are faster to sketch and much more practical. Not only do they present a clear representation of design concept, but they are a must have for production. Flats can be turned into CADs and can be used in mood/presentation boards. Fashion schools have not followed this shift and still focus more heavily on illustrations, and not enough on flat sketching.

Computer Programs - Must Know
I can't stress enough the importance of knowing popular computer applications for creating floats, flats and CADs. Most companies expect proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Excel since they are relatively affordable in comparison to more industry specific software. Unfortunately, the coverage of Illustrator and Photoshop provided by fashion schools does not meet the actual demands of the fashion industry. Many companies are also requesting knowledge of WebPDM, so if your college offers a course in this program, it would be to your benefit to take it. If your school does not teach this program, find a school or venue that does offer this program and take it!

Flat Sketching - Must Know
While interviewing candidates for design positions, we've seen applicants' portfolios filled with beautiful illustrations and then say "That's nice, but can you flat sketch?" If flats are included in their portfolios, they are usually basic, lack important details, and are not visually appealing. If the candidates sketches are halfway decent; my next question is "do you know Illustrator and Photoshop? " Almost everyone says yes, but it's usually far from the truth.

A lot of fashion school grads seriously believe that they know these programs well, but what you learned in school isn't enough - fashion schools don't teach these skills well enough for entry level designers to be competent within the fashion industry. Schools just cover basics, which are usually forgotten without practice. Take the extra effort to practice and become comfortable with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and other programs beyond what schools teach: read books and take additional courses (offered in either classroom or online settings).

Creating Specs in a Copycat Industry - Must Know
Knowing how to spec (measure and detail) a garment to create garment specifications, or "specs" is a fundamental skill. Many companies create their spec sheets using Excel. Although garment sizes and measurements vary from company to company, depending on different market segments and categories, if you know the principles, you'll be able to quickly adapt to the standards of any company. You don't even need to know how to develop specs from scratch!

As a head designer, to set spec standards for a company, I usually went to different stores, found garments with a good fit and copied the basic measurements. This is quite common - the fashion industry is a copycat industry- most fashions hanging in the stores are knock-offs of another company. Once, during a shopping trip in London, a store salesperson noticed I was a fashion designer collecting style ideas. He mentioned that his store received a constant flow of American design companies such as Calvin Klein, whose designers come to knockoff their merchandise. That's right - even top designer brands use knockoffs for their ready-to-wear collections. There are even official terms: a "knockoff" is when a style is copied and a "rub-off" is when patterns are copied.

Educate Yourself!
Many fashion schools such as FIT in New York (Fashion Institute of Technology) offer important classes like "flats and specs for the fashion industry", but believe it or not, these courses are not required by the curriculum! Another handy course that should be taken is "creative fashion presentation." Salespeople use presentations a lot as visual aids. In addition they create a good impression and convey creativity level. If you can make outstanding presentations you'll be assigned to do them often, and believe me it's more fun to make boards than do fits or send faxes and organize showrooms.

To sum up: in order to get a job before the rest of the entry level fashion design candidates, you need to focus on refining skills that are highly demanded in the industry. Become proficient with flat sketching, include flats in your portfolio, and be extremely comfortable and knowledgeable in Illustrator and Photoshop. Not only will you be ready with the skills you need to succeed in fashion, but discussing how you went the extra mile to keep up with industry standards will definitely impress any prospective employer!

Once people stopped forcing me to study certain things, I found out I was actually interested in them after all.

While I was in school, I avoided thinking about subjects like Biology and Science and Maths in my free time. But now, months after graduation, I often find myself very interested in things like what makes plants work, and various other things that I always refused to think about any time other than in school. The reason? Nobody's forcing me to think about it now. I feel free to think about whatever I want, whenever I want.

If my dad wanted to explain to me what nutrients a mushroom (for example), lives on, just a few months ago I would have ignored what he said. But now, I actually am trying to grow some mushrooms (the edible kind), and the more information I have, the better. Imagine just how proud my Biology teacher would have been if I was growing mushrooms back in school... that's probably why I didn't. People trying to encourage me to do things that other people have decided that I should do really discourage me instead.

This is why schools don't work. Education is so over-generalized that everyone has to learn the same stuff, and students aren't encouraged to spend time on things that THEY would rather learn about. About 2 years ago I started learning HTML and making my own website. If I had to do some Maths homework, but would rather work on my site, my teachers would have no sympathy for that. It was the whole "we don't care what you would rather do" attitude of the teachers that made me hate their subjects, not the actual subjects themselves. Every time somebody would try to "nudge" me into doing something related to a subject in my free time, I would just go do something that _I_ chose for myself instead.

You could say this is stupid, and you could say students should continue to be interested in aspects of subjects that interest them, instead of avoiding them because they're taught at school. But you can't tell students how to feel. If the way they're expected to learn things makes them disinterested in those things, it's not the students' fault. It's the school system's fault, and you can't change the way millions of students feel about school, but if you REALLY want to, you CAN change the school system

TEFL?

TEFL - what does it mean? TEFL simply means Teaching English
as a Foreign Language. This acronym describes everything to do with
teaching English as a foreign language - the industry, the courses and
qualifications and the profession.

Different types of people approach TEFL at different points
in their lives. Some are on gap years, others on career breaks, others
as a permanent career and yet others who see it as means to earn money
and travel the world.

A lot of the people who start out doing TEFL on gap years or career breaks end up doing it permanently.

The next question must be 'How do I become a TEFL teacher?'

How do I become a TEFL teacher?

The days of just turning up in a foreign country and landing a
TEFL job on the strength of being able to speak English are slowly
becoming a thing of the past. As the market has matured, the need for
qualifications has become essential.

Before you consider taking a TEFL course you might want to
think about where you are going to teach. Different countries have
different rules regarding minimum qualifications of teachers. Some
countries accept just a TEFL qualification while other countries will
only accept a TEFL qualification with a degree. Qualifications may
differ depending on the type of school you are going to work in, an
International school may require a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in
Education).

Choosing a TEFL course

There are hundreds of different courses to choose from,
ranging from 4 week full-time courses to short weekend courses to
online courses. The choice is overwhelming!

Do some research before choosing your TEFL course. If you
know where you are going to teach, check what qualifications are needed
and accepted in the country (or countries) you are going to.

Let's have a look at some of the different types of courses on offer.

4 week full-time courses

The most well-known courses available fall into this category:
the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) and the
Trinity CertTESOL (Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers
of Other Languages). These courses are generally offered full-time over
a four week period (there are also options to take these courses
part-time, for example at weekends, over a longer time period).

If you take one of the above mentioned courses, you fill find
that they are recognised worldwide and nearly all language schools
would employ you on the strength of one of these qualifications.

There are other four week courses available with a similar
structure and syllabus. As long as these courses are 120 hours long and
contain six hours of teaching practice, then they will probably secure
you work in most language schools.

A typical day on a training courses of this nature would look something like this:

Morning session 1 - input (language analysis), break,

Morning session 2 - input (phonology), lunch, afternoon session 1 - teaching practice, break, afternoon session 2 - feedback.

The rest of the day would be spent lesson planning or completing written assignments.

Four week courses are intensive (hard work) but, if you are willing to put in the effort, worth it.

Short courses

If for any reason you can't take a four week course, then a shorter course might be the option for you.

People choose the shorter courses for a number of reasons but
primarily because of the shorter duration (usually a weekend, 2 or 3
days long or a week) and the cheaper cost. Although in the short term
the savings on time and money might seem like a good idea, if you are
going to teach for any length of time you will eventually have to take
one of the longer courses.

Shorter courses are a great introduction to TEFL and some
even give you some form of teaching practice. Generally, you can't fail
these courses but will receive a certificate of completion which can be
used in making job applications.

If you are planning to use TEFL as a means to keep travelling, then a shorter course might be the one for you.

Online courses

A third option would be an online TEFL course. These courses
can give you an introduction to TEFL. Online TEFL courses are generally
the cheapest way of getting a TEFL qualification and usually you can
complete them without giving up your current job.

The downside is that online courses don't offer any real
classroom experience (no teaching practice and no observation of other
teachers). Online courses might not be recognised in the country or
countries you are going to teach in.

Online courses can offer modules on areas like teaching
English to young learners and teaching business English. If you plan to
specialize in any of these areas, then an online course might be a good
starting point.

Guide to the Perfect Behavioral Interview Reponses (STAR Format)

So you're a college student who has landed
your first interview for a college internship or full time job. Now if
you've given it much thought, you've probably asked yourself "Self,
What exactly are those recruiters looking for as an ideal answer to
their questions?"

The first thing you should have probably asked is "Self, What are they
going to ask me in that interview?" For that, please refer to my
article Questions recruiters are likely to ask in an interview. After
you've read through that, read on in this article!

Now that you know recruiters are very likely to ask you behavioral
questions, the next thing to do is to figure out what they are looking
for in an ideal response. And the wonderful thing is that there is a
systematic response you can give to every single question they can
throw at you! You just have to know how to formulate it. That's where I
come in.

In my very first interview freshman year (with General Electric), I
thought I was providing great answers, had some great experiences to
share, etc. I look at it now, and it's no surprise I didn't hear back
from them. I even wonder how fast it took the recruiter to throw away
my resume.

Here's an example of mine of what not to do... The interviewer asked me
"Tell me about a time you demonstrated leadership." To which I
responded fairly plainly "Well...I was Senior Patrol Leader in Boy
Scouts for several years, that's probably my best example of
leadership."

The interviewer was nice and tried to help me through the rest of the
interview, but honestly, it was a train-wreck. I hope you can see why.
Now I know you won't ever do anything quite that bad, and I wrote this
article to make sure of it.

Recruiters who use behavioral questions are looking for responses in what's called the STAR format. That breaks down into:

Situation
Task
Actions Taken
Results

As long as you answer behavioral questions in that format, you cannot
go wrong! And the cool part about it is that it flows in a logical
order that keeps you on track. By practicing this format, you are
guaranteed to answer questions fully and concisely.

So let's get down to the details of the Situation component. The
Situation is basically setting the stage for your response with the
relevant background information. This includes where and when you were
working (company, how old/what year in school), and maybe a bit of info
on the problem you faced.

The Task blends slightly with the Situation, and is just as simple.
This is something along the lines of "I was assigned to do x." Plain
and simple, it may be the most straight forward part of your response.
Keep in mind that it also sets up the measuring stick for your results,
so be sure that it is actually what you were assigned to do!

The Actions portion of your response should be where the meat of your
answer is. You need to take this opportunity to say "I performed xyz
analysis and used abc tools to do so." or "I led the group by doing
abc." You also need to consider how technically savvy your interviewer
is. If she/he is an engineer, then you can feel free to go into a few
(but not too many!) details about what you did. If you get an HR person
doing the interview, don't even try to go into details, it probably
won't help!

The Results should also be very easy, but is without question the most
important part of your response. As interviewers and companies are
looking for candidates who have been extremely effective in their past
jobs and experiences, this is where they look to determine if you are
someone they want to hire. Use this opportunity to highlight your
results, and their impact on the company: awards, cost savings, sales
made, production improvement, etc. Don't short change yourself on this
section, its critical that you highlight every positive impact that you
made!

I also must warn you not to exaggerate or lie about your
accomplishments! This doesn't ever help anyone in the process,
especially if a company does their homework by calling your provided
references to ask about you!

Finally, your response should take approximately 3-5 minutes total. Any
longer, and you've lost the attention of your interviewer. Any shorter,
and you probably haven't gotten your message across either.

A good interviewer will also probe you with questions like "Tell me
more about that" or will guide you along with "So what was the result
of that?" All I can say is don't rely on them to help you along. Ace it
the first time through!

Here is an example of one of my responses all put together. See if you
can pick out each section. I used this response typically for a
question along the lines of "Tell me about a time you faced a difficult
technical challenge."

"While working at NASA, Kennedy Space Center, I was in an organization
that was doing preliminary design work for the Launch Pad systems of
new rockets we are using to go to the Moon and Mars. We received Flight
Vehicle Commodity Loading requirements from Johnson Space Center and
Marshall Space Center, and then designed the Launch Pad accordingly."

"My boss had originally given an assignment to a Contractor and was not
happy with their progress. I was assigned to take over the project,
lead the contractor, and come up with multiple conceptual solutions for
providing a specified amount of liquid helium to the vehicle on the
launch pad and cost estimates for each method within 2 weeks."

"To do this, I learned as much as I could about liquid helium,
utilizing in-house resources such as reference books, other people in
the department knowledgeable on the subject, etc. I considered multiple
options: starting with atmospheric liquid helium, or with pressurized
gaseous ambient helium, the use of expansion valves, compressors, heat
exchangers, etc. I learned about heat exchanger design, heat exchanger
fluids, efficiency/effectiveness, etc. I worked with heat exchanger
companies to get details, and had the contractor do detail work here."

"I also knew very little about cost estimating, so I worked with the
contractor (who had experience here) to learn broad strokes and details
here. I also worked back and forth with the contractor to ensure that
technical details were correct."

"In the end, I wrote a technical report to summarize all data,
assumptions, and everything so that it could be easily reviewed by
peers, and easily applied in the future after I had left for school.
The concept study and cost estimate were turned in on time to my boss,
who was pleased. In the end, we created a detailed 35 page study
report, which was sent to people at Marshall Space Flight Center and
Johnson Space Center who gave it their thumbs up. The format I used for
the report was standardized as "Boilerplate" for the organization
reports, and I was awarded a NASA On The Spot Award."

This response fit neatly into about 3-4 minutes, and covers all of the
components of the STAR format. Interviewers loved it (and told me that
they did) because it flowed so well and I had demonstrated fantastic
results. I encourage you to write out your examples too, as this can
make them clearer and simpler. Good Luck!

Ohio Supreme Court ruling eliminates jury discretion

Whether you're a CEO of a company or a guy who sweeps floors for a
living, the Ohio Supreme Court has put its stamp of approval on a law
that could have devastating consequences for you if you're seriously
injured in an accident.

In a major opinion issued last month, the court showed contempt for its
past decisions, disrespect for the Ohio Constitution, and disdain for
the men and women who serve on juries.

The court, in a case called Arbino vs. Johnson & Johnson, said for
the first time in Ohio history that it's constitutional to disregard
the findings of a jury if the jury decides to award more than $250,000
to someone injured in an accident to compensate for the person's pain -
even if that pain may last a lifetime.

The court reached this landmark decision despite clear precedent that
such a law is unconstitutional. Essentially what the court says this
time around is that the Ohio General Assembly really, really, really,
really wants to limit damages for insurance companies, so who are we to
stand in their way?

Look at what the Ohio Constitution says, then you decide whether what
the court has done makes any sense. The relevant part of Article I,
Section 5 states, "The right of trial by jury shall be inviolate ..."

In Ohio, the constitutional right to trial by jury has always been
interpreted to mean that judges and the government won't be able to
invade the jury's fact-finding function.

That's why jurors are there, right? To hear the facts of each
individual case and decide what they think is fair. Now, though, jurors
can spend days or weeks hearing the facts of a case, reach a difficult
decision that the injured person should be awarded a sum to compensate
for the pain an accident has caused, only to have that decision gutted
by a judge if the sum exceeds $250,000.

How does the right to a trial by jury remain inviolate if a law
requires judges to violate the decisions a jury reaches? We should
probably now read the constitution to say: The right to a jury shall be
inviolate, provided it doesn't cost an insurance company too much money.

The right to have a jury determine the facts of a case has been the
backbone of our legal system for hundreds of years. It serves as a
check against a judge who might be corrupt or for some reason
influenced by one side or the other. It's a concept as old as our
country and traces its roots to the Magna Carta. As the court's
majority notes, Thomas Jefferson viewed jury trials as "the only
anchor, ever yet imagined by man, by which a government can be held to
the principles of its constitution."

If the court really believes those words, shouldn't there be a much
more compelling reason to upend the jury system than the desire to save
insurance companies money? In the interest of full disclosure, I am a
personal injury attorney and I work hard to help people who have been
injured in accidents get a fair shake from insurance companies. And,
yes, this decision has the potential to hurt my wallet in certain
cases. The real impact on my practice likely will be minimal because
most people aren't hurt so seriously that the cap will apply.
Regardless of my personal stake, this is simply a matter of right and
wrong, and I don't think people realize the impact of what's actually
taken place.

Everyone has heard about the infamous McDonald's scalding hot coffee
case. It's a complete oddity, but insurance company lobbyists always
trot it out as if it's the norm. The caps enacted in Ohio are far more
likely to affect the average man or woman unfortunate enough to get
into an auto accident.

Here's the nightmare situation that could happen to you or a family
member. You're driving to work when a guy driving a delivery truck
takes his mind off the road while talking on a cell phone and plows
into your car. Your head hits the window, your ankle is crushed when
your car's frame crumples, and your body is snapped back and forth like
a rag doll, and your life has been altered forever.

The head trauma leaves you plagued by headaches. Your ankle injury
means that every step causes pain to shoot through your leg. Your back
hurts so much that getting a real night's sleep is impossible. You
can't play ball with your kids anymore or even mow the yard. And the
pain doesn't go away after a week, or a month, or even a year. In fact,
by the time you get to trial years have gone by and the docs are
telling you you'll never run again and your pain will always be with
you.

A jury hears your case and awards you the cost of your medical bills
that may have to be repaid, and lost wages, and decides - after hearing
your testimony, your doctor's testimony, your spouse's testimony, the
defense doctor's testimony, and the defense attorney's arguments - that
your lifelong pain is worth $500,000. Or $1 million. Or $2 million.
Whatever it is, it's not enough to compensate you for what this
accident has done to your life and no one - no one - in that courtroom
would change positions with you for any amount of money.

That's the point where the judge steps in and reduces the jury's pain
and suffering award to $250,000 because that's what the law requires.
The jurors heard the facts and struggled to come to a fair decision,
only to have their legs cut out from them by a General Assembly that
knew nothing about the facts of your case or the impact the accident
has had on your life.

And our Supreme Court just blessed this system.

It blessed a system where a jury can hear the specifics of an
individual case only to have the decision wiped out by an arbitrary cap
the state Legislature's Republican majority came up with to satisfy
their chamber of commerce and insurance company campaign contributors.

The court justifies its decision on the thinnest of rationales. See if
you can follow its logic: When judges reduce jury awards for pain and
suffering, they aren't interfering with a jury's fact-finding function,
they're simply applying the law.

What?

Spin that around your head for a while. It never gets any clearer. So,
the jurors can do their cute little dance, and we'll pretend to care
about what they have to say. But the second they award any money to
someone that could actually make an insurance company pay fair
compensation, well something simply must be done. Apparently, the right
to trial by jury is inviolate, but only up to a point.

And there is nothing in the Supreme Court's opinion that would stop the
legislature from capping pain and suffering damages at $1 or $5. The
amount of the cap isn't the point. Caps are wrong at $1 million and
wrong at $1. Jurors are in the best position to determine what someone
deserves for the pain caused by an accident.

The caps can be lifted in extreme cases such as when someone loses a
limb or can no longer independently care for himself and perform
life-sustaining activities. But the caps apply to more common cases
like I described above, even if the person will experience a lifetime
of pain.

To their credit, Justices Terrence O'Donnell and Paul Pfeifer dissented from this badly reasoned and disheartening opinion.

I understand that the General Assembly desperately wanted to do the
bidding of the business interests that have pumped millions of dollars
into GOP campaign coffers. (Incidentally, those same interests also
have contributed millions to Republican candidates on the
all-Republican Supreme Court.)

Legislators, whether Republicans or Democrats, can get into all sorts of mischief when big money is thrown their way.

That's why we have a right to expect that the Ohio Supreme Court will
do more than justify its decisions by paying fawning deference to the
legislature.

We have a right to expect someone in Columbus to stand up for the
people of this state. And most importantly, we have a right to expect
the court to apply Ohio's Constitution and legal precedent, especially
when we're talking about something as cherished and revered as the jury
system.

to do things differently. If a strategy is not working, try something
different until you find something that does work. Many times every day
you face situations that look different from what you had planned. You
could be rigid and continue to do things the same way over and over. Or
you could be flexible and respond by adapting to the changing
situation. Which response is more likely to produce your desired
outcome in the long run?

Go on — make a change — try something different

People in their eighties and nineties looking back at their long
lives have said that their regrets are more often about the
opportunities for change they didn’t take than the ones they did. More
often than not, change pays off. Hockey player Wayne Gretzky put it
this way: “You miss 100% of the goals you never try for.”

Then why don’t people make more changes? What keeps people from
trying new things? Comfort? Convenience? Fear of the unknown? Using old
methods feels easier—even though it often isn’t.

How well do you handle change? Do you hold on to old ways of doing
things even when you know they don’t work? We all do sometimes. It’s
not easy to recognize or admit when something isn’t working. Some
people routinely fight against change. You’ve probably known rigid,
inflexible people who refuse to adapt to new circumstances. But let me
ask you: How many highly successful rigid people do you know?

What’s flexibility? It’s the capability to adapt to new or changing
situations to obtain the outcome you want. It’s the ability to get off
what’s not working and find what does work. And it’s a prime ingredient
of a successful life in a changing world.

Why Flexibility?

Every day we face situations that are different from what we
expected or planned. But we do have choices when this occurs. We can be
rigid and stick with a set of behaviors that no longer fit the plan—or
we can adapt and handle the situation with flexibility. We all know
that life does not follow a rigid plan. It’s fluid, dynamic, and
ever-changing. Staying flexible means having the courage and openness
to change when your situation changes.

Every aspect of our lives demands flexibility. You’re running six
mornings a week to train for a tennis tournament but you sprain your
ankle; instead of giving up, you swim in the mornings until you heal.
You’ve planned lunch with an old friend at an upscale bistro, but when
you learn that she’s bringing her four small kids you opt instead for a
burger restaurant with a play area for kids. You’re planting a bed of
red roses and need six more to finish, but your local nursery is out of
the red variety—you alternate red with white. You get a great
promotion, but at the same time your mother falls ill, so you defer
your job change for three months so you can take care of her, but while
you're there you study to prepare for your new position. Life can
require flexibility in the greatest and smallest of situations.

Be ready to change what you’re doing to reach your goals

Flexibility challenges you to let go of what’s not working and try
new things until you hit upon what does work. It’s hard to
recognize—even harder to admit—when something’s not working. You’ve
invested time, money, pride—and you’ve convinced yourself it has to
work. To become flexible, develop the ability to recognize when it’s
time to let go of an unworkable method and try something different.
It’s hard on the ego, but until you admit you’ve got a problem, you
can’t take the next step.

Try these steps to move toward greater flexibility:

• First, you have to accept the reality of change. Recognize that it’s
normal to change the way you do things because it's inevitable that
circumstances change. It’s nothing personal—it’s just the nature of
life. The best plans in the world can become impractical or obsolete.
Make it okay for something not to work.

• Second, in order to let go of things that aren’t working, learn
to detach your ego. We get our pride wrapped up in our methods—we take
the need for change as a personal attack on our intelligence or our
ability. Or sometimes we just get stubbornly attached to our way of
doing things because it’s “our way.” Make sure your ego doesn’t get in
the way of your flexibility. Save ego for the results, not the means.
Take your work, not yourself, seriously. What you want is more
important than looking good.

• Third, challenge your assumptions. In order to see when change is
needed, you have to become conscious of your beliefs about a situation.
Don’t judge (and condemn) alternate paths before you’ve tried them. To
increase awareness of your assumptions, become a rigorous questioner of
your thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. Question your authority! Learn to
ask yourself, “Why do I think that?”

• Finally, learn to recognize the difference between a plan that’s
not working and a temporary setback. When things are not going well it
could be because the method is bad and doomed to fail, or it may simply
be a momentary pause in a massive upswing. How will you know the
difference? Your gut will tell you. Tune in to your gut, then measure
your results.

New ideas don’t come to those with closed minds. When you realize
it’s time to reformulate your actions, break yourself wide open. Start
by promising yourself to be wide open to new thoughts. Learn to suspend
your assumptions and listen without judgment. Brainstorm. Branch out.
Get creative. Explore as many possible solutions as you can. By
throwing yourself open to the possibilities, you’ll discover avenues
for success that you would never have considered before. You might even
find ways to improve things that are working.

If you want to experience whole-life success, learn to dance with
change. To succeed, you have to look for ways to make everything
better. Suspend your assumptions, seek new ground, throw yourself
headlong into the unknown.

Borrow ideas from other subjects, other applications. If you can
find wisdom in the way a violin is tuned, that same method may apply to
the way an annual report is written. If the patrol method used by
Canadian geese to safeguard their flocks works for them, the same
method might work to keep a group of nine-year-olds safe on a camping
trip. Be willing to cross borders, mix and match, move methods from one
application to another, and stand them on their heads.

Don’t fall back into rigidity if you find a possible solution and
it doesn't work. If the old method wasn’t the method, this new one
might not be it either. Be ready to try several new methods! Assign a
deadline to the experiment and give it all you’ve got for the duration.
If, in that time, it yields few results, let it go.

Complacency is the enemy of success. When you get comfortable, you stop
moving forward. You dig in, shut down, doze off, disengage. Your spirit
falls asleep. If complacency is the enemy of success, change is its
best friend. Change wakes you up, gets you on your feet, and engages
you.

But change for its own sake isn’t what I’m talking about here. It
doesn’t work to simply change things randomly. The rule of thumb when
it comes to change is to keep what’s working—and let go of what’s not.

During recent years, data thieves have compromised computer systems at a myriad of universities, including Ohio University, Notre Dame University, Georgetown University, Western Illinois University and University of Alaska-Fairbanks, leaving many questioning the vulnerabilities of campus networks, and challenging college Information Technology (IT) personnel to find new approaches to securing the personal data of students, faculty and alumni.

While a slew of hacking incidents in corporate America have gained recent national attention, experts say that academic institutions are in many ways more vulnerable than corporations to security breaches because universities engender a culture that emphasizes openness and information sharing, not firewalls and threat prevention.

"Even though most colleges and universities employ a professional IT staff, each campus department or office might run its own computer system on the school's network," said Clete Rickert, director of information systems at Villanova University, and a Nuesoft Xpress client. "While this decentralized approach to managing information helps to contribute to the collaborative, open environment that universities foster, it also detracts from IT's ability to effectively secure all of the computers on the network at any given time."

To counter this security challenge, IT professionals are beginning to look for ways to house sensitive data - such as patient information in a health or counseling center - off site, instead of storing it on a campus server that may or may not be sufficiently protected.

One option for many IT staff is the application service provider (ASP) model. ASPs host data and manage software programs for a wide variety of users from a secure, centralized data center. Some ASP applications are delivered via a Web browser. Others, like Nuesoft Xpress, avoid the browser environment altogether, and are delivered by a secure Internet connection between the user's desktop and the ASP's data center.

Once you have filled all this in, then circle one or two item(s) for each subject and focus on getting resources to support. The other items not circled can be used for another year or if you run out of material for this year.

2. The Basics - Homeschoolers need some basic reading, writing and math materials. No matter what your finances, the internet and libraries provide some incredible resources. Don't disregard them just because they are free. Your children should spend time doing math and language each day. They should either read on their own or listen to you or some combination of that each day. For writing they can draw if they are younger. If they are over 8 years old they can write a page for you each day. Once children know how to read they should be able to teach themselves with a little guidance.

3. The Supplements - Once you have the basics covered you can add other subjects from your original plan such as Science, Bible, Foreign Language, Art, Music, etc.

If so, there are a handful of scholarships available specifically for those students who are seeking aviation careers. Each scholarship has its own requirements and criteria - most are offered by organizations that support the love of aviation.

1. AERO Club of New England - The Aero Club of New England scholarships are awarded annually and recipients are selected on the basis of merit and need. ACONE's growing scholarship program provides a wonderful way for the Club and donors to assist deserving young people and to forge lasting relationships that can provide inspiration and support. Thanks to all that have worked to make this important part of ACONE a continued success.

2. AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) - AOPA offers two scholarships, the McAllister Memorial Scholarship and the Donald Burnside Memorial Scholarship. The AOPA Air Safety Foundation/McAllister Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually and administered jointly by the AOPA Air Safety Foundation and the University Aviation Association. One award in the amount of $1,000 will be made to a promising young man or woman who, without assistance, would find it difficult to obtain a college education. Award will be made to U.S. citizens without regard to sex, race, religion or national origin.

The recipient must be enrolled in and plan to continue a college curriculum leading to a degree in the field of aviation. Previous recipients are not eligible.

Announcement of scholarship awards will be made annually on or about July 1 by the AOPA Air Safety Foundation after consideration of applications received by the deadline submission date. Recipients will be notified by letter. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

a. Be a college junior or senior at the time the application is submitted with at l east one semester/quarter to be completed after September 1, 2008. b. Have achieved academic proficiency (grade point average) at time of application of 3.25 or better (on a 4.0 system). c. Be enrolled in a baccalaureate level, non-engineering aviation degree program at a four-year institution and plan to continue the following year (community college students are eligible when they have transferred to a four-year institution). The applicant's college must be listed as an organization described in section 170( c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954. d. Submit a 250-word maximum typed, double-spaced essay on: "Assuming that pilots who voluntarily engage in safety education are safer pilots, how can ASF reach the other group of pilots who don't think they need safety education?" e. Application must be accompanied by an official transcript from applicant's college or university. The Registrar's Office can mail your official transcript to the below address or place in a sealed envelope so you can mail with your application form.

3. Astronaut Scholarship - This scholarship is supported by more than 70 astronauts from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Shuttle programs. In efforts to help retain leadership in science and technology, this organization provides scholarships for college students who exhibit motivation, imagination, and exceptional performance in the science or engineering field of their major. To date, the foundation has awarded nearly $2.5 million in scholarships to 226 deserving students interested in aviation maintenance, being pilots or aerospace engineers.

4. Boeing National Merit Scholarship - Every year Boeing provides scholarships to children of Boeing employees who are selected as National Merit Scholarship winners. Students enter this academic competition their junior year of high school by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in the fall.

5. ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) and Naval ROTC Programs offered by the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and the Air Force, train qualified young men and women to become officers in those services upon graduation from college. ROTC is available in more than 1,000 colleges and universities throughout the U.S., both those that host ROTC units or detachments and those with cross-enrollment agreements with them. Requirements include taking a full course load, wearing uniforms once a week during military labs, drills, military science presentations, and other practical training activities.

Check out a movie. If you have a DVD or VHS player, check out a British or American movie and turn on both the English sound track and the English subtitles. Often times, English language learners are much further along in their reading skills than their speaking or listening skills. Feel free to watch the movie once for the fun of it, but then get ready to watch it slowly and with more care. Work through the movie scene by scene. Listen carefully to the dialog. If you can not make out what is being said, read the subtitle. Repeat the scene several times until you know you have understood each word. Then ask yourself the following questions. What was the scene about? Who were the main characters? How do these characters feel about each other? What things did they say that support your idea of who they are and how they relate to one another?

College students take tests:

The answer to the question is all of the above. Although a few professors give only one big, all-or-nothing (talk about pressure!) test at the end of the semester, most give at least two. Thus, at the very minimum, you can probably expect to take a midterm exam (usually given in a regular class meeting) and a final, which is scheduled during a special exam period at the end of the term. A final exam normally lasts two or three hours; you may finish in less time, or you may still be scribbling as someone pries your blue exam book out of your cramped hands.

It's likely, however, that more than two tests (and other factors, such as papers and discussion) will contribute to your final grade. In some classes, especially science-oriented ones in which you're continually being bombarded with new terms and concepts, you may be tested once a week or more.

Which really isn't such a bad thing. In a way, getting lots of tests is better than having only one or two. For one thing, these tests tend to be "little": Each one doesn't count for a major chunk of your grade, so if you bomb one, it won't kill your overall average in the class. The sum total of these tests, however, may count for a lot--a third of your entire grade, perhaps. So if you do well on these little tests--and have a healthy grade going into the final or midterm--you might be in pretty good shape and feel much less pressured as you prepare for the big ones. Also, being tested regularly forces you to study and keep up with the material, which also is good; this way, you aren't trying to re-learn in December what you digested (and promptly forgot) way back in September.

Types of Tests

In huge lecture courses, you'll probably get "objective" tests, which deal with hard information more than ideas. In smaller discussion classes, you're much more likely to get essay exams, in which you'll be expected to organize concepts and write thoughtful responses to questions.

Objective tests typically deal with true-or-false questions, matching, multiple choice, identifications, and completions. As you've probably figured out, these tests are more convenient to grade and are often handled by machines or teaching assistants. For some students, however, these can be worse than essay tests. Particularly nightmarish are questions without an obvious answer but rather a confusing array of answer options, such as:

A B C D A, B, and D B and C A and C All of the above None of the above

A, B, and D? What kind of mind, you may wonder, dreams up such a test? We don't know.

But we do know that this kind of test--which might cause you to have acid flashbacks to the SATs, Advanced Placement, or any other "achievement" tests you may have endured on your journey to college--throws a lot of people.

No test is a perfect instrument for measuring a student's progress; each semester, some of the most capable students--people who think clearly, write and talk well, and work hard--fail to come through exams with the good grades they genuinely deserve. Maybe they suffer from what educational psychologists call "test anxiety"--believed to affect about 25 percent of all students, some much more than others. The numbers are thought to be even higher for minority students. For whatever reason, some good students just don't "test well."

Others, however, seem to outdo themselves, to perform above their capabilities during exams. These students may not be brilliant, but they're shrewd enough to squeeze the full mileage out of the knowledge they do possess. Also, they take everything they're given--and sometimes professors give away quite a bit. Most professors have never taken Tests and Measurements, Educational Psychology, or other courses in teaching methods and techniques. Partly as a result, they often goof up on their own exams--unintentionally dropping hints for those students clever enough to take advantage of them. Hey, a break for you!

This question, for instance, might show up on an American History exam:

Okay. Assume you're stumped by that one. Later in the same test, however, you find:

During the early days of World War II, President Roosevelt's Secretary of State was: A. Henry Wallace B. Cordell Hull C. George C. Marshall D. Douglas MacArthur

Well, you may not know who the Secretary of State was (Mr. Hull), but you would have to be pretty unobservant not to have noticed that the second question provides a big clue--the answer, in fact--to the first.

"I've left myself open to just this kind of thing many times," admits one professor, "and I'm amazed at how few students have grabbed the freebies that have been available to them."

The take-home message here: Grab the freebies. If you really study the test, you can pick up clues that add points to your score. It may not be much, but every little bit helps. Here are some other tips:

* Don't leave anything blank. You have a shot at points if you make a stab at an answer. You get diddley squat if you leave it blank. On true-or-false questions, you have a fifty-fifty chance of getting it right; on a multiple-choice question, your odds are usually no worse than one in four. On short-answer questions, a professor may give you a mercy point or two for at least making the effort--any effort--even if your answer is almost entirely wrong.
